Not all Buckeyes have big-mouths, but one Willie Cunningham of Cincinnati, OH certainly qualifies as a big-mouthed Buckeye. He is a radio personality on 700 WLW. He is a former lawyer. He is a political conservative. He is also a world-class hemorrhoid.
A year ago I wrote a blog post entitled Not My Kind of Conservative, and that post was in response to some comments that Ann Coulter had made; as well as the attitude behind her comments. I compared Coulter to Bill Cunningham, who I then declared that no one outside of the WLW listening area would recognize. He is more recognizable now due to his comments at a McCain rally in Cincinnati, McCain’s response to his comments, and Cunningham’s threat to vote for Hillary. I know this is “old” news by now, but I was out of the blogging loop for a couple of weeks and I wanted to post about this subject.
My disdain for the schtick of talk radio personalities such as Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter, etc is not new. You can read about it in the post cited above or here. While I may agree with some of their political positions, I rarely ever agree with their attitudes and presentation. They give conservatives a bad name, and I would be delighted if Coulter and Cunningham not only voted for Hillary but became full-fledged, card-carrying DEMS.
Cunningham was in the national news because he referred to Barack Hussein Obama as a “Chicago hack” and repeatedly used and emphasized his middle name. Afterwards McCain apologized for and repudiated the actions and comments of slick Willie.
I totally agree with McCain’s response. He needed to say what he did. Slick Willies temper-tantrum at being spanked by the GOP frontrunner and his subsequent threat to vote for Hillary proves that he, along with the majority of his talk-show brethren (including Laura and Ann) are not political idealists but personal promoters.
I love what Michael Reagan wrote in his column McCain Cold Shoulders Warm Up Host:
Cunningham seems to have forgotten that when you are speaking at a rally for a candidate, you’re not there for yourself, but for the person you are representing. Unfortunately, when my fellow conservatives forget what their function is under certain specific circumstance, such as doing a warm-up for a candidate, they get it into their heads that everything is always about them.
It’s my opinion that they view everything as being about them, but I digress. This article by Peter Bronson of the Cincinnati Enquirer is also worth a read.
The Slick Willie apologists are confused by McCain’s comments. “After all,” they say, “Hussein is Obama’s middle name. What has Cunningham done wrong?” Such comments are either disingenuous or just plain ignorant. Did Cunningham repeatedly say, “Vote for John Sidney McCain!”
His tactic of incessantly using and emphasizing Senator Obama’s middle name was to insinuate that he is a closet Muslim. After all, we have all seen the Internet photo of Obama in traditional Somali garb. We’ve seen the photo of him standing for the national anthem without placing his hand over his heart. We all know that his wife is not a true patriot. So forth and so on, ad infinitum and ad nauseam.
I wonder if anyone would have a problem with Barack Hussein Obama if he was a conservative? I’m sure the liberals would be repulsed, but what about the talk show luminaries? The pundits seemed to have loved Mormon Mitt Romney. His system of belief is just as heretical as Islam. By the way, Obama is not a Muslim.
Coulter and Cunningham’s defection threats reveal that they do not have conservative principles at heart. If they cannot back McCain, then why not write-in a vote for a conservative whom they deem worthy? Is Hillary truly more conservative than McCain? Obviously not, but that is not the point. The point is, and has always been, more hot-air from the talking heads.
I will never cease to be amazed at the number of Christians, particularly conservative evangelicals, who constantly go to the mat for these selfish, egotistical, talking heads. I am even more amazed that people do not form their own opinions on the news, but instead simply affirm the positions of their favorite talk show host. I suppose it’s easier to parrot (or should I say ditto) the loquacious rants of someone behind a mircrophone instead of being a critical thinker on the issues and forming your own point of view. Which, in the case of a Christian, should be formed on the basis of scripture; not on the shoulders of Rush and his posse.
