McDonalds vs. Starbucks

I like a good cup of coffee. I consider myself a coffee connoisseur. Of course, by coffee I mean coffee; plain, hot, and black coffee. No sugar. No cream. No milk. Nothing that ends in “cino”. As a coffee connoisseur I have arrived at the conclusion that people drink Starbucks coffee for the “experience”; they want to be hip. Why else would anyone overpay for a bad cup ‘o joe? I have never liked Starbucks coffee,and it appears that I’m not alone. According to this AP report at BusinessWeek.com McDonalds’ coffee beat Starbucks in a taste test. Here is an excerpt from the report.

Published reports say the nonprofit organization’s taste testers ruled the coffee served by McDonald’s beat out the pricey brew served up at Starbucks.

Of course, even if the Starbucks coffee tasted better I’d still be a McDonalds man. Taste or no taste I’m sticking with the cheap coffee.

Congratulations Colts

The Colts have won the Lombardi Trophy, and for the first time the city of Indianapolis has a world championship (unless you count the ABA Pacers titles from the ‘70s). The Indianapolis version of the Colts has finally stepped out of Baltimore’s shadow. This team has its own set of superstars, future Hall-of-Famers, and now its own Super Bowl victory.There are many feel good story lines from this Colts’ season. The team rebounded from last year’s choke job in the playoffs. Peyton Manning finally threw the “can’t win the big game” monkey off his back. Reggie Wayne winning the Super Bowl in the year that his older brother was killed in a car accident. Dallas Clark getting a second opinion about his knee injury and being a key contributor throughout the playoffs instead of recovering form knee surgery. The defense totally reinventing itself after the regular season. After allowing obscene rushing yardage to every Travis Henry and Maurice-Jones Drew, this team stuffed, in consecutive weeks, Larry Johnson, Jamal Lewis, and the two headed NE monster of Corey Dillion/Lawrence Maroney. That’s all good, but Tony Dungy is the reason why I am absolutely giddy over this win. Dungy is a man of integrity. He is consistent. He is respectful. He is a man of self-control. He doesn’t embarrass his organization or his city with ridiculous sideline antics or angry, obnoxious press conferences. Tony Dungy earned and deserved this win and this honor. In a Super Bowl where everyone wanted to talk about the first black head coaches to coach in the big game, Dungy was more apt to acknowledge his Christianity than his race. He recognized the significance of being the first black man to coach a Super Bowl champion, but he always pointed out that a man with Christian principles and ethics can coach a champion as well.
